Ken grew up on Sepviva Street in Fishtown. After attending St. Laurentius he went on to high school at North Catholic. Around this time he discovered beer (sometimes openly displayed and easily procured on the back dock at Schmidt’s Brewery). After high school and a detour through Ursinus College it was off to the limelight of Atlantic City.

Working at the Sands Hotel and Casino he discovered fine wine, great food, and the art of being a host. Entertaining celebrities (Frank Sinatra, Joe Namath, Steve Carlton, Jay Leno and Cher to name a few), regular guests (who became like family) and friends from Fishtown (the Familga D’alicandro, the Gabors, Ed & Jean McCloskey) his future began to take shape.

During the 90’s a change in career found him back in the area and working at Zurbrugg Hospital in Riverside New Jersey. Returning to Philadelphia just as the craft beer renaissance was taking off, he fell in love with beer all over again. Friends in the industry offered new ideas about what to drink—who would have thought to drink Corsendonk at a tailgate? (Thanks Curt!)—and where to hang out.

Throughout the 90’s the highlights of every year were the Eagles Tailgates. With T.K. cooking the chili and Curt picking the beer the win/loss column didn’t necessarily define a great season. As the 90’s got ready to end Ken returned from a hiatus traveling (ask him about his stint volunteering at the Wolf Education and Research Center in Idaho or visiting the Orcas in the San Juan Islands and Northern BC) and  joined the team at Shackamaxon Catering on North 3rd Street in Northern Liberties.

After answering an ad to be a catering truck driver he found himself pressed into service as an event supervisor, operations manager, and within a year, partner in the business. In his role as an event planner and a host, Ken brought his love of good beer and good food together by helping his clients choose beer (a lot of it local) for their celebrations.

Today Ken continues to work for Shackamaxon Catering; he and his enthusiastic staff work with both local and international clients, helping brides and grooms throw spectacular parties featuring locally grown food and locally brewed beer.  The Tailgate has become legendary with friends from Nodding Head, Yards Brewing Company (Kehoe Kehoe Kehoe), Sly Fox Brewery and of course Monk’s Café. (How do you think The Tailgate became the third place in America to pour a Chimay on draft? (Thanks Tom!)

Now Ken brings his enthusiasm and expertise to Memphis Taproom. He’s looking forward to making every experience here exceptional, whether it’s watching the playoffs, celebrating with family or stopping by on the way home from work to grab a beer and chill with friends.
